Chapter 1: First Commandment- Thou Shall Know Thy Self

You don't understand. This time was different.
*In what way?

It was how I found out about the lay off. We were on vacation on Martha's Vineyard- well Oak Bluff to be specific- in Massachusetts. It's an island tucked just off of Cape Code. Going there is a big deal for us. You have to find a place to stay, like an apartment, condo or house, all of which can be found to suit your particular needs- for a fee of course. Then there's the drive up to Woods Hole, in Cape Cod to catch the ferry over to the island. The drive takes six hours. I get there in four.

*So you were speeding!

No! We just leave at twilight when there's little or no one on the road, so there's no traffic. With my best tunes on, I am the master of my universe, at least for a while. The best part of the trip is the ferry ride over to Martha's Vineyard. The smell of the salt water is refreshing and relaxing.

There's also the view of the seagulls suspended motionless above the ferry, held in place by waves of air seemingly exhaled by the boats movement. It means the vacation has begun. Imagine the collection of the week's stresses flowing out of you all at once, and in it's place calmness. It's a time for rejuvenation. The Vineyard - as it's often called- has a certain charm that lends itself to this feeling of peace. It's due to the scale of the island, which is only miles long in any direction, and the many Victorian homes with their broad welcoming porches, and the fellowship of family/friends, and those who will become friends.

We go every year. For us, it's the place to be, and we always have a great time. Many of our family and friends take vacation there at the same time. It's like camp for adults. It's a great reunion. This particular time, we were to be there for two weeks. There is something about taking vacation for an extended period of time. Your bones start to relax, you feel better in your skin, and the wrinkles in your brow seem to fade away.

*Sounds relaxing!

Life Improvement

Okay, this is the next excerpt from the first chapter "Thou Shall Know Thy Self". Self analysis is everything to doing great things in life.

Chapter 1: First Commandment- Thou Shall Know Thy Self
  • * Go on, what happened next?
Anyway, getting past myself was the biggest obstacle. Getting back to believing in my worth, my strength, my abilities and my confidence was hard. Being released, downsized, and re-organized or any of the other nice was of saying, "you're fired!" is just a horrible feeling, especially if you've been with a company for a long period of time. It's like a bad breakup or divorce: you didn't want it; didn't expect it; and then you find out there's someone else. They hired someone else for less money, someone who's younger, someone they can mold....You can't be hurt any worse.

* You sound bitter. Did that happen to you?

What do you mean?

* The divorce thing; you speak so passionately about it.

No! No! I was just using that as an example. Anyway, at least in a real divorce you can do something. You have rights. If you're mad enough, during the division of property you can ask for the stupid dog you hated just to tic her off. Or you can ask for her favorite dishes just because you know she loves them, but you could care less about. You could fight back, get satisfaction, something! However, when the pink slip comes, usually it's on the company's terms and conditions.

* Okay, you had your feelings hurt. Now what?

You don't understand. This time was different.
